Functional Neurology
Functional neurology is a branch of neuroscience and clinical practice that focuses on the assessment and rehabilitation of neurological dysfunctions without relying on medication or surgery. It is based on the principle of neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to adapt and reorganize itself in response to stimuli. Functional neurologists use a variety of non-invasive techniques, such as eye movement therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, sensory stimulation, and balance training, to target specific neural pathways and improve brain function. This approach is often applied in cases of concussion, dizziness, movement disorders, chronic pain, and learning disabilities, among other neurological conditions.
Unlike traditional neurology, which primarily diagnoses and manages neurological diseases through imaging and pharmacological treatments, functional neurology emphasizes a personalized, dynamic approach to optimizing brain function. Practitioners evaluate subtle neurological imbalances through detailed physical and neurological examinations, sometimes incorporating tools like quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) and computerized posturography.
